Summer Reading!

17 05 2010

I know everyone has eagerly been anticipating the annual Summer Reading Program. Well, your wait is finally over! The theme this year is Make Waves at Your Library (yeah, we’re goin’ beachy), and here’s how it works:

Track the time you spend reading

Count the time you attend library programs

Write book reviews

Every time you reach 4 hours -or- write a book review, you’ll be entered into a drawing for prizes!

Simple, right? Wanna know what the prizes are? We have things like gift cards, an iPod Touch, water bottles, an Xbox 360, backpacks, Nintendo DSi and other stuff. So the more you read, attend or write book reviews, the more times you get entered into the drawings and the better your chances of winning!

Everything is being logged online this year. Sign up by clicking here.

From Page to Screen: Little Brother

24 03 2010

I have decided to start a new series called: From Page to Screen. These posts will feature new movies (or future movies) that are based on books.

I’m pretty excited about this one. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is quite the thriller. Here’s the summary from our Summer Reading List:

“After a terrorist attack, computer hacker Marcus is held by the Department of Homeland Security and tortured in a secret prison. Upon release, he vows to take down a system that threatens the rights of every citizen.”

You’ll definitely be into this one if you like computers, technology, and takin’ down the man!

This book has been optioned by Angryfilms – no further information or release date yet.

Inkpop – for aspiring authors…

3 02 2010

Do you have dreams of being a writer someday? Have you been looking for feedback on your work? Well, look no further!

Major publisher HarperCollins has just launched an online community called Inkpop that brings together teen lit hopefuls with readers and publishing professionals. The social networking site aims to “spotlight aspiring authors and the readers who provide the positive springboard for feedback.” Not only that, but there is an editorial board who will read those pieces that get the most votes and decide who will ultimately land a publishing contract. Very awesome.

Sherlock Holmes

8 12 2009

As you all eagerly await the new Sherlock Holmes movie (Robert Downey, Jr. is quite dashing, isn’t he?), I thought you might want to check out the original.

There are many Sherlock Holmes adventures to choose from — please don’t disregard them because you think they’re “old-fashioned!!” They are exciting, adventurous and really well-done. These stories won’t disappoint and they’ll give you a great background for the movie.

Here’s a link to the catalog and some of what you can find in the Library.

New Moon soundtrack – review

18 11 2009

With the much anticipated November 20 release of the movie New Moon, devotees will get great satisfaction in listening to this soundtrack. Like the soundtrack of Twilight, the music in New Moon is moody, dark, and a perfect fit for the romantic turmoil that’s so much a part of the story. Delivered by some of the best bands in alternative rock, this soundtrack is top-notch from start to finish. Fans will have a lot to sink their teeth into especially Death Cab for Cutie’s “Meet Me on the Equinox,” Muse’s “I Belong to You,” and the Killers’ “White Demon Love Song.”—Ellie R , Grade 11, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School (courtesy of SLJ 11/18/09)
