Epic MovieEpic Movie An obvious satire of many of the recently released “epic” movie adventures, this film features four not-so-young orphans: one raised by a curator at the Louvre, another a refugee from Mexican “libre” wrestling, the third a recent victim of snakes on her plane, and the fourth a “normal” resident of a mutant “X”-community. Throw in a chocolate factory, an enchanted wardrobe and some wizardry - and you’ve got the makings of an epic movie!

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging

4 12 2007

Movie alert! Okay, so fans of Louise Rennison’s Georgia Nicholson series should be excited. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging is in pre-production, meaning that it is scheduled to be released as a movie sometime in 2008.

Depending on the success of the first movie, they may make more based on the books in the series. Here’s a video I found from an open audition:

Don’t forget to check our catalog for copies of the books!

The Golden Compass… coming soon to a theater near you!

14 11 2007

Golden CompassCalling all fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series! Yes, I know this really isn’t breaking news — but I can’t help it, I’m excited to see Lyra and Pantalaimon on the big screen. You can check out a cool movie trailer here, that includes a nifty Alethiometer and a way to figure out what your daemon would be (mine is a Gibbon named Pereus).

Don’t forget to read the books first - I firmly believe that regardless of special effects, they will still be better than the movie. We have them all and you can find them in the catalog.

The movie opens in theaters December 7, 2007.

Beowulf, adaptation by Gareth Hinds

6 11 2007

BeowulfOkay, so you’ve been assigned to read Beowulf for English class. Or maybe you’ve seen the previews for the movie and think, hmmmmm….. that looks pretty good. Oh my gosh! It’s based on a poem! I might want to actually read that.

Well, Gareth Hinds has taken the epic poem Beowulf and put it into graphic novel format (for those of us who like to look at pictures).  Having never actually read the original work, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But I have to say, the artwork is pretty amazing.  The reader is immediately swept into Viking lore and legend and the fighting scenes definitely leave you sitting (or reading) on the edge of your seat.

If you have been afraid to tackle Beowulf before, I would not hesitate to read it in this format. The story is easy to follow and accompanied by powerful illustrations. Hooray for comics! Um… I mean, graphic novels!
